Firm Profile / Bio

Richard Bubnowski has been has been involved in the design of commercial and residential projects in the New York metropolitan area for over twenty five years. Originally engaged in the practice of New Urban residential and mixed-use projects, Richard spent several years working with the nationally renowned architectural firm of Looney Ricks Kiss in Princeton, along with many other firms, before opening his own design studio in 2005. Today his award-winning studio focuses on designing highly crafted houses along with furniture inspired by traditional and contemporary architectural styles. His ability to redefine traditional styles with a clean, modern approach has developed into the signature of his practice.

He received his architectural training at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and later studied at Pratt Institute where he received his professional degree. He has also continued his post graduate studies through seminars at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.

Over the years his work has been published in various journals including, Coastal Living, Style 1900, Home, Design NJ, Metropolitan Home, Arts & Crafts Homes, Old House Interiors, Qualified Remodeler, and Builder Magazine. The architecture and furniture of his Surfers End House was featured as the cover story in the 2006 Summer / Fall issue of Style 1900 and the October 2007 issue of HOME Magazine as well as Old House Interiors as recently as November 2009. RBD's "Diana Chair" was included in Lark Books' publication, "500 Chairs". His drawings, designs, and furniture have been exhibited at Pratt Institute, The Shirley Goodman Resource Center at FIT, The Van Alen Institute, and The Michael Ingbar Gallery of Architectural Art in New York City. He has also been an exhibitor at the Fine Furnishings Show in Providence.

Since opening his studio, his firm has designed private residences along the coast of New Jersey and as far away as Costa Rica. He is continually developing new ideas for his Surfers End furniture collection, as well as designing new houses along the coast. During the past year, his firm has received a 2011 Watermark Award for the kitchen at New Moon Cottage. In 2010 they received both a Watermark Award and a QR Master Design Award for the renovation of the Conlin Bath in Bay Head, New Jersey. Earlier, in 2008 they received both the Gold and Best of Show awards from the Qualified Remodeler Master Design Awards for the renovation of another Bay Head, New Jersey beach house. Recently, RBD's South Surf Road Residence was featured in both the June 2011 issue of Luxury Home Quarterly and again in the October / November issue of Design NJ. Upcoming in 2012, RBD's New Moon Cottage will be featured in the March issue of Design Bureau.
